1956-1962

When Australian television first started in 1956, Australia used a 10 channel system on the Very High Frequency (VHF) band. In 1959 Ultra High Frequency (UHF) was planned between 500 - 855MHz in 7MHz channels, although it took 21 years for the first UHF television station to start.

1962-1980

In 1962 the Goverment ended FM radio tests and announced a new channel plan. The old 10 channel system was replaced with a new 13 channel plan.
Notice that channels 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 (the only channels in use at the time) used the same frequency as the previous plan, so as to not interfere with older television sets.
Ch. 12 was added in the 80's and the gap between 9 & 10 is now called 9a.
