GTS4 Port Pirie began 1 March 1968, and BKN7 Broken Hill began 16 August 1968. In 1974 the two stations merged to form Spencer Gulf Telecasters, and soon began using the name Central GTS/BKN. The station took a mix of all 3 commercial network programming.

In 2002 Southern Cross Broadcasting acquired Spencer Gulf Telecasters for $32 million, adding Central GTS/BKN to an already long line of regional television stations.

Southern Cross won the right to broadcast a second TV channel under Section 38A of the Broadcasting Services Act in 2003, and in January 2004 started broadcasting Southern Cross Ten. This new channel was a full affiliate of Network Ten, however Central did occassionally broadcast Ten material such as the AFL in the phase-in period for the new station. Central was renamed Southern Cross GTS/BKN in January 2006, and began sharing its new logo with Southern Cross stations in Tasmania and Darwin.
